Design tips for small kitchens

Having a small kitchen is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because you won’t have much to clean as you won’t have a lot of space for making a mess. But it is a curse because you won’t have enough space for everything you think you need. But try to always look on the bright side of life and help yourself by reading some of our design tips for small kitchens.

If none of these tips seem to work for you and your small kitchen, maybe it truly is time to move to a new home with Moving Kings Van Lines FL.

Turn every corner and every wall into a storing space

Whether it be shelves or cabinets, you need to make sure that you are using as much space as possible. There is never enough storing space in the kitchen. You will need it for glasses, mugs, spices, plates. Everything basically. Try not to leave plenty of space unused but don’t make your kitchen even smaller by adding too much. You need some wall space for other things.

Add hooks and magnetic bars

Hooks are great. They are small and you can hang plenty of things there. You can hang your pans on them. Or you even buy bags that you will hang where you will put other stuff such as utensils. You can also purchase a magnetic bar. As it is magnetic, anything made out of metal is going to stick to it. It is also very modern as this appeared a few years ago.

Put a windowsill

If you have a window, use that space too. Make a windowsill. This will be a perfect place for keeping spices or even some plants as decoration. You can even put some baskets here in which you will store some other things.

Have a big sink if there is no space for a dishwasher

Many people don’t have dishwashers in their small kitchens. They sure are helpful but when you just don’t have enough space, you have to rely on washing your dishes manually. This is why you should consider having a larger sink. It will give you the opportunity to both wash and dry your dishes. Another great design tip is to have a double sink. That is when you have one sink that is divided into two parts. Keep one part of the sink for washing and the other one for drying dishes.

Storage helpers are your best friends

Storage helpers come in all shapes and sizes. The latest trend is having a trolley. It can serve great as both a storage solution and a decorative piece. People usually store canned goods here and spices.

Store things on top of cabinets

Many people forget this but you can actually use the tops of your cabinets for storing things that you don’t use as often as others. We’re talking about space between your cabinets and your ceiling. Add some baskets or boxes and store those less-used items here.

Get rid of everything that you don’t need

This is not much of a design tip but it is a tip. You definitely need to get rid of a lot of stuff when you have a small kitchen. Figure out what you use the most and what you really need and store those other things away or throw them away. You definitely don’t need 10 bowls in your kitchen at all times.

Keep your kitchen simple

As it’s a small space we’re talking about, if you want to make it appear larger you need to keep it simple. Make sure everything is color-coordinated and that not a lot of things stand out. You also want to stick to a neutral, bright palette for a classic look. This might sound difficult to do as we already said that you need to use as much space as possible but if you declutter your kitchen, this just might be the solution you need. Keeping it simple also allows you to spend as little money as possible on the kitchen renovation.

When making your countertops, cabinets, and shelves, make sure you go with high-gloss. High-gloss can also help your kitchen appear larger as well as more clean and put-together. Using high gloss also gives you a chance to experiment with colors.

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

Mirrors are the oldest trick in the book of “making small rooms look bigger”. Using mirrors gives the illusion that there’s more to your kitchen than there actually is to it. Plus, mirrors are much easier to clean than tiles. Using mirrors will also make keeping your kitchen clean much easier. And who doesn’t love a 2 in 1 situation?

Keep your kitchen open

Many people believe they need doors in their kitchens. But if your kitchen is small, there is simply no space for a door. You need to ditch it. There are other alternatives such as sliding doors and curtains but we believe those can’t help to make your small kitchen appear larger. Keeping it open is a great way to make your kitchen modern too.

Try to have more shelves than cabinets

Cabinets are good to have in the lower part of your kitchen. But if you are looking to open up your space a bit more, shelves are what you need. The only disadvantage of having shelves instead of cabinets is that you will have to clean your kitchen more often. And if you are a busy person, you might want to avoid this design tip. What you want to do then is order custom kitchen cabinets for your small kitchen.

Have a colorful floor or a rug

Many people don’t realize this but having a colorful floor or a rug can open up a small space. Make sure you go for bright colors such as yellow, red, green. But you will have to be very careful when cooking if you decide to go for a rug. Even though small kitchens are easier to clean, rugs aren’t easy to clean at all.
